Frequently Asked Questions

Are children allowed at the Hut?

Mountainhut.nz encourages all ages including children to enjoy and participate in the alpine backcountry. As part of our safety management system a parent or legal guardian is required to complete and sign a Mountainhut Application and Release Form on behalf of any person under the age of 18 years of age. This and guest pre trip briefings help create an awareness of what to expect and insures that any child is adequately supervised equiped and capable to participate in activities offered by mountainhut.nz.

Is there cellular phone coverage?

The closest coverage is Vodafone cell phone coverage at sunset rocks at the ridge above the hut. Whakaari has no dependable cell phone coverage over most of the terrain or trails so best factor that into your equipment choice. Take a PLB if you have one. Mountainhut.nz supplies an emergency kit for guided and self guided groups which includes PLB and Satellite phone.

How cold will it get in winter?

Kelly Hut is at 1880 metres and at this altitude you can expect to be 5 to10 degrees cooler than the valley floor. The weather can change quickly and temperatures can drop fast with wind chill or precipitation. Guests need to have the appropriate protective clothing for any activity they are participating in such as ski touring, hiking or biking. An equipment check is undertaken by guides prior to guided trips. Kelly Hut has a Little Cracker Burner so for those guided guests overnighting or wanting shelter during the day the hut is easily accessible and warm and cosy.
